The difference between operating instructions and work instructions

Operating and work instructions are needed to inform employees about how a process is carried out or to convey information about a workplace.
Operating instructions
An operating instruction contains written orders from the company for the correct and safe handling of work equipment and hazardous substances. It is one of the employer's obligations.
Work instructions
A work instruction focuses on the process — that is, safely carrying out the activity itself. A work instruction describes how a specific activity is carried out successfully, for example when operating a machine.
The work instruction is an aid, a kind of guide for the employee, and is often written in the form of a checklist. This makes it suitable as a basis for onboarding new colleagues, or as support when an employee repeatedly makes the same mistakes despite their qualifications.
